On our travels in Asia we had the chance to check out the Eames exhibition at the Art Science Museum in Singapore. Though we couldn’t include every shot from the exhibition, below are some of our favourites…

What was unique about this exhibition was that it showcased a number of rare and never-before seen works and images from the Eames family collection, the Eames Office, and the archives of Herman Miller. This is a shot of the entrance foyer.

This letter from Charles proposing to Ray was placed at the entrance foyer, and this immedietely gave viewers the impression that, fabricated within the display of their architecture, furniture, graphic design and film work, this would be a very up close and personal exhibition.

On their travels through India, the Lota became a significant reference point for Charles and Ray. They believed it was an example of good design, ‘developed unselfconsciously and improved organically, over time and by many users.’

The banana leaf is widely used in India as plates, and like the Lota, the Eames’ used the ‘simplicty, versatility and essence of the banana leaf to describe the importance of simple and effective solutions.’

The iconic molded plywood leg splint designed in 1942, commissioned by the US Navy for wounded soldiers during WWII. “We wanted to make the best for the most for the least.” - Charles Eames

Photography was an important part of the Eames’ design process as it afforded the opportunity to move around an object, capture different angles, and isolate and assess details that would otherwise be missed by the human eye.

The Chairs Gallery.

Deconstructed display of the popular DSW chair. I love how you can see each component in detail.

There were over 100 artefacts in this exhibition, but what grabbed my attention the most was this beautiful statement made by designer Philippe Starck describing Charles and Ray. “They don’t create beauty and intelligence, they just transmit what they are.”
